Photo scavenger hunts put a new twist on the traditional scavenger hunt.  Instead of bringing back items you take pictures.  That means that you are no longer limited to items to collect but can have the participants take part in various activities while someone in their group photographs them with a digital camera.  The photos can then later be presented as a slide show.  Here are a few great kids Scavenger Hunt Ideas.

Alphabet scavenger hunts

Alphabet scavenger hunts are great fun.  Choose about 10 letters from the alphabet and have the children take a photo of each other doing an activity starting with that letter. For example, for the letter S the children might sled, snowboard, slide, or even swat a fly. For the letter C they could cartwheel, curtsey, or clean a counter top.  The ideas are endless. 

Holiday Scavenger hunts

No matter what the holiday, photo scavenger hunts with a holiday theme always work well. For Thanksgiving someone or the entire group could dress like a pilgrim, make and wear Indian headdresses, or pose with a pumpkin.  Imagine a group of teenagers wearing paper bunny ears and posing for an Easter themed party, or having their picture taken with the mall Santa for a Christmas party. 

Nature Scavenger Hunts

But there is another way to go – planning a scavenger hunt using photos from the original idea to the decision about who was successful and should get the prize. Even though you have narrowed the type of scavenger hunt to using photos there are many possible themes for this type of hunt as well.

Once you decide on a basic theme and come up with a list of items or locations to photograph, it’s time to divide the group into at least two teams. Each team should have a group leader and a small digital camera that will allow you to review the photos. Photo subjects can be signs in front of hometown businesses, specific landmarks around the city etc.

It may also be a good idea to award points for the photos. Some subjects may be more difficult to find or photograph so they can be given bonus points. Make sure that the point values and the method of winning is established beforehand, so the teams know what they are working toward.

Finally, as you plan your photo scavenger hunt make sure you have a time limit that makes the activity challenging. Have fun!
