Whether Christmas is going to be merry with tons of gifts or you are among the many people struggling to put just a few under the tree this year, there is no excuse not to completely enjoy every moment spent with your family. It doesn’t matter if you are shopping away or if things feel less jolly right now…the following scavenger hunt ideas can be adapted to your family so everyone has a Merry good time.
I actually wish everyone could spend a little less money on gifts this year and find a way to simply laugh together instead.
1. Hunting is not just for kids!
Most hunts are for the delight of the wee ones, but there can be a hunt going on that the kids know nothing about. Allow each adult to bring in one funny or novelty gift (make it cheap, it’s about the fun!) and hide it strategically. Everyone will be hunting through the day, finding things at odd moments.
2. Scavenger hunting with a time limit.
Collect a bunch of small gifts or perhaps gift cards and hide them all over the house. Collect everyone outside and set a timer, then blow a whistle and send everyone running in to find the goodies. When the time is up…everyone keeps what they were able to find!
3. The Secret Santa-Scavenger Hunt combo.
Many families do some version of Secret Santa where everyone selects a name to buy for, but no one knows who has their name. You can do this and then allow each person to hide their gift (wrapped and addressed for the chosen recipient) prior to the big day. The fun will be not only finding the gifts, but finding the one meant for you!
Here is one Shoestring Alternative that can be used with any of these Scavenger Hunt Ideas: hide holiday cards with funny or sentimental messages rather than gifts. Finders can read aloud to everyone.
